Although "The Humbling" is far from being Roth's masterpiece, the truth is that this man in purely unable to write bad books. Here, we fly over Simon Axler, a famous aging actor facing the sunset of his career. As I went through those pages, it came to my mind a very cynic, violent but at the same time human sentence of Friedrich Dürrenmatt in "The visit": «le monde a fait de moi une pute; je ferai du monde un bordel».
